Ultra Low-Cost Carriers (ULCCs) are great for travelers who want to explore more and fly for less. Here is Flytrippers’ overview of ULCCs in the Edmonton area.

Our mission is to help you travel more, which is why our Edmonton cheap flights deals page is our main focus… but we also want to share great travel tips, especially about ULCCs.

We know this business model very well and we want to become your reference for all things that save you money on travel… and ULCCs are great for that! Pack light, forego the frills… and travel at a much lower price than ever before!

We’ve started posting ULCCs deals on our deals page, but just know that as of now almost all our great deals are still on regular airlines, without the ULCC restrictions. ULCC flights have a special orange ULCC tag in the bottom right corner of the deal cover image.

We have already been seeing many one-ways within Canada on sale regularly for under $100. Flights under $200 roundtrip are almost all thanks to Ultra Low-Cost Carriers: these airlines really are the greatest thing to happen to the aviation industry in, well, ever.

If you follow our content regularly, you know that we’re really excited about the arrival of ULCCs in Canada. The absence of such airlines was one of the main reasons why airfares are so expensive in Canada, compared to Europe (where I’ve flown for $10), Asia (where I’ve flown for $15), the US (where I’ve flown for $15) and even more and more developing countries, like Peru (where I’ve flown for $20).

So let’s take a look at ULCCs in the Edmonton area, because I won’t get into all the details about this business model again: we already covered Swoop’s launch in Canada and already have a few interesting articles about ULCCs: How Ultra Low-Cost Carriers Work and The Most Common Myths About ULCCs… with much more to come.

By the way, I’ve flown 100+ flights on ULCCs overall on 15 different ULCCs and I can definitely tell you that the experience is great. To see for yourself, you can read my detailed review of Swoop, Canada’s newest ULCC and my detailed review of WOW air, a transatlantic ULCC… and again, look out for much more ULCC reviews and content here in the coming weeks.

Ultra Low-Cost Carriers In Edmonton

Luckily for Edmonton travelers, you have many destinations to choose from if you want to fly cheap (with two ULCCs in YEG). You can see the exhaustive list of destinations in just a second.

Airlines

Flair serves Edmonton (and is now headquartered in the city) and Swoop has an operational base at the airport, so both of these airlines are guaranteed to lower airfares for travelers in Edmonton.

Unlike many Canadian cities, you don’t have access to cheap flights across the border since the closest ULCC airport would be in Great Falls or Kalispell, quite a long ride away. But Frontier is sometimes worth the drive to Calgary.

Ultra Low-Cost Carrier Destinations

Here are the destinations served directly from Edmonton by Ultra Low-Cost Carriers… you can then often connect to many other destinations, although the ULCC price advantage isn’t always as huge with connections.

ULCC Destinations From Edmonton (YEG)

Flair: Abbotsford-Vancouver (YXX), Kelowna (YLW), Toronto (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR)

Swoop: Abbotsford-Vancouver (YXX), Cancun (CUN), Hamilton-Toronto (YHM), Kamloops (YKA), Las Vegas (LAS), London, ON (YXU), Mazatlan (MZT), Orlando (MCO), Phoenix-Mesa (AZA), Puerto Vallarta (PVR), San Diego (SAN), San José del Cabo (SJD), Winnipeg (YWG)

The best way to find the lowest price if you are looking for specific dates and destinations is always to use our flight search tool that will compare all airlines for you (no airline can have the cheapest price 100% of the time, you should always compare).

And if you’re flexible, follow these instructions to know how to find the cheapest dates for your specific destination or even the cheapest destinations for your specific dates.

But again, to see flight deals from all airlines, you should check out our Edmonton cheap flight deals page regularly. Buying a flight at 50% off during a deal will always be the best way to save money on flights.

And make sure you subscribe to our free newsletter (like 60,000+ other Canadians already are) to get all the great flight deals (and our many travel tips) directly into your inbox, specially curated for Edmontonians.

Finally, consider taking up travel hacking. It’s a great way to get free travel (even better than cheap travel right?) and we have a brand new section coming soon with a lot of information. In the meantime, you can check out our ranking of the best credit cards in Canada, many of which give you hundreds of dollars in free travel.
